In the Viseu district, on a steep plot overlooking the Douro River, stands Casa das Corujeiras. We were tasked with rehabilitating and expanding the dilapidated building, preserving the region's architecture and maximizing the use of interior spaces.

Starting with the intention of preserving our client's heritage and considering the natural context in which the house was situated, we decided to minimize exterior alterations. Here, we expanded the kitchen by intervening in the old porch, formerly used as a barbecue area. On the other hand, we decided to excavate the rear façade to increase the number of openings, essential for inhabiting the new interior compartments.

The social area and the sleeping area are clearly separated from each other. On the ground floor, we find the living room, the kitchen, and the guest bathroom. With the desire to open these spaces to the magnificent views of the Douro River, French doors were designed into the main façade of the house. Upstairs there are 2 suites with double beds and one with a single bed.

Apparently, the house has maintained its traditional character, highlighted by its exposed stone structure. However, the addition of new large glazed openings has implemented a contemporary touch to the typical architecture of the region.
